Dean of Technology wins national award for work with Boys State technology
For our 3rd Staff Spotlight segment, we turn our attention to a bright, young staff
member who has put his professional expertise to work at ALJBS. Brian "Eppy" Epstein was a 1994 Boys State delegate from Hopewell Township (Cumberland County). Since then
Eppy has put 11 years into the program as a counselor progressing through the ranks of Junior Assistant Counselor and
Senior City Counselor to his present position of Dean of Technology. Wherever technology
was involved, there was Brian, trying to find new ways to improve the
experience at Boys State. In 2004, Brian was awarded the "Harry V. Groome
Award" for his hard work and dedication to the technology of the program.
Brian now acts as the Dean of Technology for Boys State, and as a Trustee of the New Jersey Boys State Foundation. In both roles, his knowledge and expertise has brought many advances to the program.
During the 51 weeks of the off season, Brian is a security architect for Comcast. He is responsible for the security of the network that serves millions of families across the nation. His expertise is Unix/Linux systems administration and system/network security.
Recently, Brian received the 2006 Red Hat Certified Engineer of the Year Award for the United States. He was specifically chosen from hundreds of applicants for his work on the Boys State program. He was honored in May of 2006 at the national Red Hat Summit in Nashville, TN.
Brian is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and is attending Capella University working on a Masters in Information Security. He received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 1999 from Rutgers University.
In 2004, Brian married his best friend, Maribeth. She has been very supportive of his dedication to the program and has even volunteered for the past three years. Maribeth is the Assistant Director of Educational Services for Applied Behavioral Consulting, a non-profit organization that offers training and services to families and school districts that support children with autism. They currently live in Yardville, NJ.
Brian deeply values the friendships and brotherhood he has gained at Boys State. Now, with the help of a strongly dedicated technology staff, he hopes the future will bring many new ideas and innovation to American Legion Jersey Boys State.
