The American Legion Jersey Boys State opened its 35th Legislative Session in the Chambers of the New Jersey State Legislature at the State House in Trenton, N.J.

After taking the oath of office, the Statesmen were addressed by Lou Greenwald, Majority Leader of the General Assembly of New Jersey. Greenwald urged the statesmen to take up action and to be involved in government.

"[people] come to government to help solve their problem," said Greenwald. "That's what we do. If you understand the tenants of what it means to be a good friend, you should get involved in politics."

He continued by noting the responsibility that falls on those in state government.

"[Serving in the State Legislature] is an opportunity to give back and to solve problems," said Greenwald.

Afterwards, State Senate President Stephen Sweeney stopped in the joint session to great the newly elected legislators.

"I can't tell you how proud I am to see young people who care what is going on in their state," said Sweeney.

Sweeney echoed Greenwald in his answer when asked why he became involved in politics.

"It's nice to sit at home, but someone has to go do it," remarked Sweeney.

He urged the Statesmen to work diligently toward their future goals and to continue to push their limits.

"If you don't like it, change it. And the only way to change it is to get involved and to make it change."
